I was asked yesterday to do a budget list of Baby Safety Monitors. Well I reckon I can do one better than that.

I was emailed last week about a certain product which for now will remain nameless (more later), that was not only suffering bad interference but was broadcasting widely on the FM band of peoples radios over a 200m radius!!!! So you can see why I won’t go that route. I will however do one (or maybe two) better by letting you in on the best quality Monitors sold for under $75 US!

Angelcare Movement Sensor with Nursery Monitor

Pros

• The Sensor Pad!! Detects babies moving, whilst sleeping – The alarm sounds if bubs becomes completely still for 20 seconds – this is really sensitive!
• Portable Parents’ Unit (Sound Monitor) will pick up alarm and other nursery sounds
• Angelcare Bebe Sounds Monitors have fantastic support – top drawer.
• Best technology in the baby monitor market – in my opinion.
• Crystal Clear Audio – very low chance of static or electrical smog interference.
• The Ultimate protection against SIDs

Cons

• There have been claims of false alarms when the baby is perfectly still whilst sleeping – this happens rarely but in my view its a good thing its so sensitive… The one thing Id like to see changed is the motion sensor alarm sounds on the nursery unit – I think the parents unit/s should have the alarm (false alarms wake baby).

Safety 1st High-Def Digital Monitor

Pros

• Super clear reception with no ststic on the unit I tested. I mean zero static!
• Uses DECT 6.0 frequency for private connection with low electrical interference.
• Very compact size. Easily portable model.
• The Technology and quality of the build is brilliant – Im really impressed for the price!
• The lights on the monitor can be used to detect sound also.

Cons

• Lights are very bright at night!
• If you have power failure the unit will NOT turn back on when the power comes back on.

Fisher-Price Long Distance 900MHz Monitor

Pros

• Compact design for easy carrying – very portable.
• Night light which is great for a babies room.
• The 900MHz frequency allows for very very long reach – I tested this unit to 750 feet but manufacturers claim 900 feet is achievable.
• 4 channels to avoid electrical fog of home appliances.
• Includes indicator sound lights on the parental receiver.
• low battery indicator with on/off light and out-of-range indicator light.
• Includes a belt clip.
• SO CHEAP! RRP = $40-$50 US

Cons

• Static – especially at distance – I had blanket static at 750 feet in testing.
• 900 MHZ and 2400MHZ models are usually cheaper than DECT models but are HIGHLY susceptable to electrical interference. Cell Phones can sometimes be heard on 900MHZ models and portable phones on the 2400MHZ band are very common.
• Fisher and Paykels customer service – Ive recently heard some bad things about response times.

Whats so great about a Philips Baby Monitor which doesnt sound like a snow storm? Well maybe quite alot, in fact up to 75% of Baby Safety Monitors on the market today have electrical interference problems.

As an industry insider I can tell you that not all Baby Safety Monitors are made the same! Quality electronics inside the pretty box that the monitor comes in makes all the difference.

Definitely don’t buy a 2400Mhz model – old cordless phones run on this frequency.

I would highly reccommed you buy this product from an approved online dealer like Amazon.com – (you’ll probably save a lot of money too).

It seems a mother and newborn have been channeling the feed of the International Space Station. The new mother was left scratching her head when she saw two men floating around in her babies room.

She described the initial shock as she thought 2 men were in her babies room. Then it dawned on her when she looked closer that the two men were floating!

The lady was watching images of astronauts in the international space station. At various times over the next couple of days she saw mission control and computer projections of the stations orbit.

The bemused mother being dissatisfied with the monitors performance rang the manufacturer to ask if they knew why she was seeing the space station. Funnily enough the monitor was only designed to pickup signals within 150 feet (an old style monitor).

It appears live coverage of the mission is being beamed live onto the internet and the feed ISNT coming direct from space.

“I’ve been addicted to it and keep waiting to see what’s next,” Ms Meilinger said.

Summer, the monitor’s manufacturer, is checking out what has been causing the transmission to appear on their baby safety monitors screen.

The company insists that Baby Space Monitors are not in the companies product range.

Baby Safety Monitors

Its been years since my Mother and my Grandmother lost children to what was then called Cot Death, now commonly known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS for short). Its a really painful thing to me personally to see the tears in my Mothers eyes when we talked about it.

“You don’t know how painful it is to lose a baby, If I had the technology back in my day I would have jumped at the chance!” – My Mother

After that bombshell my mother decided it was time to warn me that the genetics of SIDS could be inherited. Shocked and horrified Im thinking what can I do for my children. Well I guess I have the benefit of technology, in particular the potent force of Baby Safety Monitors which have improved immensely in the last few years.

When my friends announced their new arrival I went along with my mate to go Baby Monitor shopping. Being a bit of a gadget geek I was instantly intrigued by the technology now involved in monitoring your wee bundle of joy!

There are three main categories of Baby Safety Monitors and they include: Audio Monitors, Video Monitors and Sensory Monitors and of course combinations of the three.

Honestly its all a bit baffling but I have now come to terms with all the jargon and technology involved… and Im thinking while I have learnt all this stuff Id save you the trouble and just dish the dirt on what I purchased and why not all Baby Safety Monitors are created equal.
